. Treating Wollstonecraft's thought as an anticipation of nineteenth and twentieth-century feminist argument has meant sacrificing or distorting some of its key elements. Wollstonecraft should not be celebrated only for A Vindication of the Rights of W oman. Hers was a philosophy of humanity. To do justice to any one of her views, especially those expressed in that now legend-ary work, they must be set within the context of a wider histori-cal worldview.

Sandrine Bergès is associate professor in philosophy at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey. She is the author of The Routledge Companion to Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (2013) and co-editor of The Social and Political Philosophy of Mary Wollstonecraft (2016) with Alan Coffee.

Wollstonecraft's writings were widely available then and still are today, a tradition nearly uninterrupted. Today her writings are also accessible as printed material and online. Wollstonecraft's lasting place in the history of philosophy rests uponA Vindication of the Rights of Woman(1792). In this classical feministtext, she appealed to egalitarian social philosophy as the basis for the creation and preservation of equal rights and opportunities for women.

Mary Wollstonecraft was an eighteenth century writer, philosopher and women’s right activist and a very active advocate of equality of sexes. Wollstonecraft was born on 27 April 1759 in London in a family dominated by her abusive father.
